How to Choose the Right Wheels for Your Car

Upgrading your wheels is one of the most impactful changes you can make to your vehicle. The right set can transform how your car looks, handles, and even how it rides. But walk into any wheel and tyre shop in New Zealand and you'll quickly realise there are thousands of options - alloys, steelies, different sizes, finishes, brands, and price points.

So how do you choose the right wheels for your car? Whether you're a first-time buyer or just looking to upgrade, this guide breaks it down step by step.

1. Start With the Right Size

The first thing to get right is size. Wheels are measured in diameter (in inches) and width. Your vehicle's owner manual or the placard inside your door jamb will tell you the factory wheel size. Common sizes in New Zealand range from 15" to 22" depending on the vehicle.

Going up a size - known as "plus sizing" - can give your car a more aggressive stance and can improve handling, but it usually means lower-profile tyres to keep the overall rolling diameter the same. If you go too large without adjusting tyre size, you risk rubbing on wheel arches or compromising ride quality.

As a general rule, stick within one to two inches of your factory size unless you've done your research or spoken with a fitment specialist.

2. Understand PCD and Offset

Two measurements are critical for fitment: PCD (Pitch Circle Diameter) and offset.

PCD refers to the bolt pattern - how many bolts your wheel has and the diameter of the circle they sit on. A wheel with the wrong PCD simply won't mount on your car. Common PCDs in New Zealand include 6x139.7 (used by majority of utes and SUVs) 5x114.3 (used by many Japanese vehicles) and 5x120 (common on European models).

Offset (measured in ET) describes how far inward or outward the wheel sits relative to the hub. Getting offset wrong can cause your tyres to rub on suspension components or poke out beyond your guards. Our team at Magwarehouse can help you find the right offset for your specific vehicle.

3. Choose Your Finish

Alloy wheels come in a huge range of finishes - gloss black, machined, silver, bronze, gunmetal, chrome, and more. The right finish comes down to personal taste and what suits your car's colour and style.

That said, some finishes require more maintenance than others. Chrome and polished wheels can look stunning but show brake dust and water spots easily. Matte or powder-coated finishes are more forgiving day-to-day.

If you're after a classic look, silver or machined face wheels are hard to go wrong with. If you want something modern or aggressive, dark finishes like gloss black or anthracite are hugely popular right now.

4. Set a Realistic Budget

Wheels range from a few hundred dollars per corner for entry-level alloys, right up to thousands for premium forged options. For most everyday drivers, a mid-range cast alloy will offer a great balance of quality, looks, and cost.

Don't forget to factor in the cost of tyres, balancing, and alignment when budgeting. A set of wheels without tyres is only half the job - and fitting tyres from a reputable brand will protect your investment and keep you safe on New Zealand roads.

5. Don't Forget Load Rating

This one is often overlooked. Every wheel has a load rating - the maximum weight it can safely carry. Make sure any wheels you buy are rated appropriately for your vehicle, particularly if you drive an SUV, ute, or tow a trailer regularly.

Wheels that aren't rated for your vehicle's weight can fail under stress, which is both dangerous and expensive.
